Apple Store Crowded But No Sales?

While in Atlanta, Georgia this past weekend, I walked through several malls. Two of the malls had Apple stores in them, but I was not able to walk through. The crowds were ridiculous and the lines were teeny tiny. What I thought was funny was everyone was checking out the new iPad device, but I only saw one person walking around with his new Apple purchase.
The one person that I saw with an Apple purchase didn't even buy the iPad. I'm not sure what exactly it was, but the box was larger than the iPad box. (And, yes I've seen the iPad boxes, even though I would never buy one for myself, my dad received one from work.)
But, anyway. My question is with all the hubbub about the iPad and the huge crowd at the Apple stores, how many Apple fans actually have purchased their iPad?
I have heard the numbers are about 2 million units within the first two months after the release. At that rate, Apple should be able to hit their expected number of 7.1 million within 2010, but with full stores and no visible sales, will they really reach their goal?
It's likely. Apple fans are diehard and true, but it's all in a matter of time and how many fans are waiting on the Apple iPad 2nd generation release.
Personally, if I was a huge Apple fan, that would be where I would spend my money. Why purchase the half-baked product when you knew Apple was working on completing the next generation product, and would probably see it on the market within a year or so.
