Do You Remeber the Niagara?

Category: Mobile Phones
It's been a while, since I first introduced the BlackBerry Niagara. but it looks like a launch date has been set. It's said that Canada may be the first to receive the phone in late may 2009 , followed by Verizon customers in June/July 2009.

The Niagara is basically a mix between Bold and Curve 8900 series, with a new design and more features.

Basically, the Blackberry 9630 is built near the same as the Blackberry Storm except with a QWERTY keyboard. The two phones truly are otherwise identical in regards to the cell phone radios (quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, single band UMTS/HSDPA, 1X/EVDO) to the overall layout.

The 9630 doesn't have Wi-Fi, so don't get too excited yet, as they're still working on it, but until then, the Niagara is is near enough for many people to switch to Verizon.... Maybe anyway.

As for the battery, which is in many cases the important selling point of the phone- how long does it last- the Blackberry 9630 uses the same batter as the Blackberry Curve 8900 and the Blackberry Storm.

* 4 hours of talk time
* 3 hours of video playback
* 8 hours of music playback
* 18 hours of light email, messenger, SMS, browsing.

The screen is also the same resolution as the Curve 8900 and the Storm- 480x360. It has a nice clear, crisp image. It's said to resemble a plasma display with a glass lens covering it.

As for the keyboard, well it's a mix between the Curve 8900 and the Blackberry Bold. The keys are smaller than the Bold's but they click like the Curve 8900. The one thing you may have issues with is the keys on the edge of the phone; if you don't hit them just right, you'll end up typing on the chrome bezel. The back button is another potential complaint as well, as it's pretty close to the trackball.

Something that many people may like, is that the browser on the Niagara zooms, but otherwise it's pretty much the same with a few tweaks here and there.

For the most part, those of you who waited on the Bold, will be much more pleased with the Niagara. Like I said, it is probably the push that many people needed to switch to Verizon. (And, yes, I realize that the Bold was released for AT&T.)
