So it's unveiled... Will you buy it? The Kindle 2 has been unveiled by Amazon. I guess Amazon figured that since they sold over 500,000 first edition Kindles in 2008, they were doing the right thing by creating the updated Kindle 2 to be released soon.
Basically, the Kindle 2 is thinner and has an overall nicer feel than the first Kindle. It has a sleek metal back and much nicer buttons. The updated Kindle has more storage capacity, better page turning functions, and the screen displays more shades of gray for easier reading.
Other than that, Amazon didn't make too many changes to the Kindle. They didn't make it too much more attractive to buyers. I mean, it's still priced at $360, which is incredibly high, if you ask me.... But, hopefully, if all else fails, any remaining 1st generation Kindles will be marked down.
The other concern with the new Kindle is that many consumers were hoping that it would have more features, and potentially become a competitor to the iPhone and iTouch or even any netbooks, since the Kindle is already light, but with the price and limited features, it's just not getting there any time soon.
The only thing that the Amazon Kindle 2 has going for it, is that in terms of an e-book and an e-book reader, the Kindle is that the device has been relatively popular, especially when compared to other e-book readers, such as Sony's reader. Plus, other devices such as iPods just aren't as good for reading books as they are for listening to music.
For now though, the Kindle is still a rather expensive toy that travelers, gadget lovers, and reading enthusiasts will pay for. There needs to be a good deal of improvement upon the price and the features before the average book reader brings one into his home.
But, if you are interested, you can pre-order you Kindle 2 for the official sale date of February 24th.
The basic features of the Amazon Kindle 2 include:
* Holds over 1,500 books
* 20% faster page turns
* Text-to-Speech feature that allows the Kindle to read blogs, books, etc to you
* Downloads books in less than 60 seconds
* Thinner than most magazines at just over 1/3 inch thick
* Weighs less than the average paperback at 10.2 ounces
* Supports 16 shades of gray for improved readability and crispness
* 25% longer battery life
* Charges via USB cable
* No wireless internet bill or other monthly fees associated
* Full QWERTY keyboard that allows you to make notes in the margins of the books or documents
