Do Mini Laptops Meet the Hype?
I was talking to a coworker the other day at work, and she mentioned that she wanted a mini laptop that she could carry around with her, so that when she wasn't at home and her boyfriend, who is in the military, sent her an IM over AIM, she could still receive it and answer him. I mean, we all know that the communication with loved ones over seas is a big concern, but are the mini laptops the solution? Granted, of course, this is not the purpose of the mini laptop manufacturing, but still...
What's the hype all about, and are these mini laptops worth it? This was my thought. I mean, personally, I love the size and capacity of a regular laptop. I mean, my Dell Inspirion has been great. I'm just not sure if I could change to a mini laptop, so I figured I'd do a little research, and this is what I came up with.
The idea for the mini laptop pretty much came about with the One Laptop Per Child project. Smaller laptops were made with the bare essentials, so that children in third world countries would have the privilege of having a laptop.
Well, these mini laptops tend to range with a display size of 7 to 10 inches and weigh about 2 to 3 pounds. You'lld find that they are much lighter than your standard laptop, so they really are mini, but it an be hard to distinguish whether or not the size of the mini laptop is worth the price.
Well, the starting price for an average mini laptop is about $299, which sounds pretty good considering that they typically have a built-in webcam, wireless capability, a network jack, a few USB ports, and an SD card reader. But, the mini laptops aren't going to perform all the same tasks as a standard laptop, so don't expect the same quality as your current laptop or desktop.
You will be able to perform basic tasks such as word processing and web browsing, but the mini laptops aren't going to compare to the high quality entertainment and gaming laptops that are available in standard size.
Plus, many of the mini laptops have Linux instead of Windows XP, which does shave off about $100 from the market price, but you won't be able to run Windows- specific software. Linux does come with a web browser, email programs, and word processing software, but 's not going to be what you're used to with Windows.
If you think that you will benefit from a mini laptop, you want to make sure that you search around for the better of the mini laptop versions.
You want to check out the Asus Eee PC 4G, which typically starts at around $399. This mini laptop has a 512MB of RAM, and has a 7 inch display screen. The Asus Eee 4G mini laptop has Linux preloaded on the laptop, which is ok but with the 7 inch diplay and small keyboard, it is not the most ideal for many adults. This is why Asus released another version of the Eee that is slightly larger and has Windows XP pre-installed. The Asus Eee PC 901 has an 8.9 inch display and weighs about 2.5 pounds. The Eee 901 has 12GB of storage and 1GB of RAM. Overall, the Eee 901 is a much better mini laptop, so definitely consider all the basic features that it has when you consider the higher price of about $450. And do consider that both of these laptops come in white, black, and silver.
Another mini laptop that you want to check out is the MSI Wind NB10060, which is produced by Micro-Star. This mini laptop has much more CPU, about 2GB of RAM, an 160GB hard drive, and a price tage of about $530. Yes, the price tag is a little steeper, but the features are much more. You already have more hard drive storage and more memory, but you also get a 10 inch screen weighing just over 2.5 pounds. the MSI Windo NB includes magnifying technology, which makes viewing words and pictures much easier, especially when editing them. You also get Windows XP pre-installed.
You'll also see the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC, which is another mini laptop to consider with its 120GB of hard drive space, Bluetooth capability, 2GB of RAM, and Windows Vista pre-installed. The HP Mini-Note has an 8.9 inch screen and weighs about 2.8 pounds. All of this sounds great, especially with the advanced speakers, USB ports, card reader, VGA monitor port, headphone jack, and large assortment of pre-installed software such as Microsoft Office Ready 2007, Norton Internet Security, MS Live Messenger, Adobe Flash Player, Roxio Creator Basic, Intervideo WinDVD, HP Backup and Recovery Manager. But, all of this does equal to a high price of about $697. You can find other HP Mini-Note PCs but, this one is truly one of the best.
So, with these four options alone, you can already see that there are many options to choose from, but you will need to determine what features that you want in your netbook and what price that you want to pay in the end. These mini laptops are good options for older kids and students and those who just don't need or use the extra features. Just remember that you will not get all of the features that you're used to with your standard laptop.
