If you have a Palm Pre, you know how frustrating it is that Palm has only released a handful of apps, but if you think about it, it took the iPhone over a year to really build up their App Store. Be patient. Let’s all not flood the app reviews with whiney baby nonsense, crying about how there aren’t any apps.
If you’re so upset about it that you want to whine and cry that the newest Palm doesn’t have as many apps as you want, then try out the homebrew apps. It’ll be worth your time with over 100 applications ranging from games to various calculators and quick dial/shortcuts to fun fact apps. You’ll even have app options for changing notification sounds, which is something that you can’t do normally.
Remember that the Homebrew apps are live for you to download, but they’re all still in Beta, so they may not be for everyone.
In order to install the proper program that will allow you to download the homebrew apps for the Palm Pre, you’ll want to check out precentral.net. You’ll have to sign up with the Pre phone forum in order to get the Web OS installation file, but other than that it’s pretty simple.
Right now, most apps are free. I found one app that had a charge associated with it, but it was cool enough to deserve the fee. The app allows you to control the TV on your computer through your Pre.
Example of some of the Homebrew Apps for Palm Pre:
• Prejeweled
• Checkers
• Solitaire
• Ssolver (soduko)
• Word Whirl
• Blackjack
• Yatz
• TipCalc
• Paypalcalculator (determine what to charge in order to get what you want after PayPal fees)
• Demcalculator (conversion calculator)
• PrePackage (track your packages through UPS, USPS, Fedex, and DHL)
• Shopping List
• TechTray Pre-edition (Technology RSS feed from popular blogs and websites)
• Beerology
• FunFacts
You’ll also find various dieting programs, nutrition apps, more games, and apps that allow one button to call you favorite friends and family members, as well as one button click for emails all without having to slide open your keyboard.
I did think it odd to have 4 apps for speed dials. I tried them all out, and I see why there are four… Options as to which you like best. So, if you’re looking for a quick dial option, check out all four so you can decide which you like the best.
If you’re crying that there aren’t any apps for Palm Pre, they’re there. You just have to download the homebrew apps.
