LG and Samsung are creating a cell phone that charges via solar panels that are built into the back of the case. The Blue Earth solar powered cell phone is a touch screen cell phone that is built to resemble a pebble with its rounded edges.
The Blue Earth is made from recycled plastic and doesn't include any harmful substances or chemicals.
The solar panels do not run the phone, but just helps charge the phone. The phone is actually powered by a conventional battery. The phone will come with a charger, but the charger is energy efficient, drawing only 30 milliwatts of energy.
The phone holds a 3 minute talk time charge after charging for just 10 minutes, which is pretty good.
But, you'll have to keep the phone in the light in order to charge it because the solar panels need the sun. You can't keep the phone in your pocket or in the dark when it needs to charge. And, when charging, you'll need to keep the phone face down, which can potentially cause scratches on the phone's face, so you'll want to consider plastic face protectors.
Overall, the Blue Earth solar cell phone looks like it's going to be one of the first true Earth-friendly products that will hit the market in terms of cell phones, which will be a big hit for environmentally friendly consumers.
