Spark Lamp Alerts Energy Usage in Home
Believe it or not, but there is a solar powered lamp that uses Wi-Fi to notify you that you've daily energy consumption. Sounds crazy doesn't it? But Beverly Ng designed this lamp and it is being used in Swedish homes. The lamp taps into an energy-monitoring source, such as a computer, which makes it flash different colors depending on how much energy you're using.
Beverly Ng has definitely tapped into the world's new energy conservation ideal and blended it with some serious design with this idea. You really can take part to reduce the energy crisis with this really nifty solar powered lamp.
The Spark Lamp collects solar energy throughout the day and stores it to use during the night. Basically, you just place the lamp upside down on a windowsill during the day to collect the sun's rays, so that at night the lamp will light up the room and fully function.
The lamp is also equipped with a 1 RGB LED, Wi-Fi module and a tilt switch with biopolymers which will help protect the lamp.
Every time you turn on the lamp, you will activate the tilt switch, which will turn on the Wi-Fi module, which will read your home's energy data. According to the amount of energy your home is consuming, the Spark Lamp will pulse the appropriate color to notify you of your consumption so far during that month. You'll see that red is below the target consumption, yellow is on target, and green is above the target. After a 3 second pulse of color, the light will turn into a regular white lamp.
The Spark Lamp was created to help create a habit of understanding and paying attention to the amount of energy you are using in your home. Although, the Spark Lamp is currently only used in Sweden, there are hopes that one day, other countries will use similar products to help increase energy conservation techniques.
